Born in Vienna in 1966, he lives and works as a freelance artist in Vienna and has taught at the University of Applied Arts Vienna since 2002. His artistic work focuses on kinetic art combined with sound. Many of his pieces are created in collaboration with other artists, musicians, and institutions in the fields of art history, music, and theater.

In 2002, in collaboration with the Institute for Cultural Studies at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, he reconstructed Wolfgang von Kempelen’s speaking machine and chess automaton. In recent years, Scheid has constructed several self-playing harpsichords and a trumpet machine for productions at the Vienna Burgtheater and the Hamburg State Opera. The trumpet machine was most recently used with a composition by Bernhard Gander at the opening concert of Klangspuren Schwaz 2025. Scheid’s “Choir of Glossolalia Machines,” a sound installation for eight mechanical speaking machines, was also performed at this festival.
