In 2004, following the unexpected death of museum director Prof. B. Fritscher, most of his privately owned equipment was acquired by Mr Kurt Krapfenbauer, who supplemented it with his own extensive collection and made it available to the museum. The merger of Prof. B. Fritscher’s collection with the Krapfenbauer collection and other private collections resulted in one of the largest collections of phonographs and gramophones in the German-speaking world. It documents the complete development of talking machines from 1877 to the present day. From 2004 to 2015, the museum was run on a voluntary basis by Kurt Krapfenbauer. During this time, a general renovation was carried out and several exhibitions and concerts were organised. Since 2015, he has supported the Vienna Phonograph Museum as president of the Museumsförderverein.
