Monika Fleischmann (1950) is considered a pioneer of interactive » media art. She is co-founder of artistic-scientific institutes such as ART+COM (1987) in Berlin, » the MARS Exploratory Media Lab (1997) at the GMD Research Center for Information Technology in » Sankt Augustin and eCulture Factory (2005) at the Fraunhofer Institute for AI and Robotics. As an » artist duo with Wolfgang Strauss, they realized artistic-scientific projects ranging from » architecture to media art, such as the Hewlett Packard Headquarters in Berlin (1987-1999) or the first » artistic VR installation Home of the Brain (1989-1991) in the Virtual New National Gallery in » Berlin. Their work explores the theme of ’thinking space’ and is part of one of the world’s largest » collections of media art at the ZKM Centre for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany. Numerous awards, » including the Golden Nica of Ars Electronica (1992) and the SIGGRAPH Lifetime Achievement Award in » Digital Art (2018).
