Private Network (2022)

by Alisa Kobzar

Since the second half of the last century, technical networks have completely changed human communication and experience of the world. It is now known that even trees communicate by transmitting signals through complex underground networks.

If this communication by trees could be magnified, what would it sound like? What interpretations would these trees give each other, and what would the processing of incoming information sound like?

With this idea in mind, composer Alisa Kobzar developed a generative sound installation for 20 channels that generates simulated reaction sequences between the trees and makes them audible.

The sound material is based on recordings of birds and electromagnetic sounds. Conceptually she deals with the network of trees as well as the anthropogenic influences on the ecosystemic cycle.
