In this workshop the participants will learn and try out how to create an own personal web search engine. Web search is a critical infrastructure that is dominated by a few technology companies. The OpenWebSearch.eu project provides an Open Web Index, which enables the creation of personal domain-specific web search engines. In this workshop the concept, components, and data of the OpenWebSearch.eu technical infrastructure are explained. Following a hands-on approach each step of the web search engine creation is demonstrated by the workshop organizers, which enables the participants to reproduce them. Participants can gain practical experience in making a segment of the web searchable through their personalized search engine. Programming skills are not mandatory, but some basic computer knowledge regarding software installation and configuration is needed. The participants need to bring their own computer with an installation of Java 17 or Docker.

With a piHole, even non-experts can easily filter, manage and analyze tracking and advertising technologies that run on many websites and services. With it you can see what influences us every day. A piHole keeps it away. A piHole is a DNS filter that can block content based on the domain it comes from.

Part 1 basics: Using a piHole
In the first workshop, we will show you how to use a piHole and how it protects you from tracking technologies. We then begin preparations for part 2.

Part 2 set up a piHole yourself and use it as a VPN
In the second workshop, we will build a piHole with you and show you how to use it via VPN. You don’t need any specific hardware for this, because a piHole can be operated on different hardware––anything is possible, from the classic Raspberri Pi to rented cloud servers, everything is possible.

Who sees and hears what we do in our everyday lives? And what do our smart companions have to do with it? As we walk together from the Folklore Museum to CoSA, we will track down the surveillance agencies that have us in their sights. You will then learn how you can protect yourself - when sending digital messages or surfing websites, but also from those who are watching us in the physical world.

10:30
Start at the DigiDic exhibition in the Volkskundemuseum am Paulustor, followed by a walk together to the CoSA, where we will look at the cameras and other trackers along the way.

12:45-15:00
Digital self-defense and improving the security settings on our devices together.
